Media FC are the champions of World Press Freedom Day Beach Super Cup, that was
played at Nyali Beach, Mombasa County after thrashing Mombasa Walk Movement FC
2-1on Sunday.
Coast
Media FC captain Mark Mutuku was the man of the match after producing a master
class to net a brace, one in each half to give the Coast "forth
estate" team the title.
Muhammad
Ridhwani gave Mombasa Walk Movement the consolation.
The
men's Coast Media team was anchored by experienced Brian Otieno from The Star
and Erick Ochieng of Baraka FM with Abdulaziz Abeid between the sticks.
Coast
Media FC head coach Dickens Obiero was a delighted man after guiding his team
to win.
"We
are not used to Beach Games but I'm happy our team gave everything despite
taking on a team that is always on the beach," said Obiero.
On
the ladies category, Coast Media FC captain Patricia Mbiti scored twice in each
half, one from the spot to seal the win, as Zubeda Pendo scored the lone
goal for the Walkers.
The
2024 Press Freedom Day was celebrated differently in Mombasa, commencing with a
10km walk from Kenol at Nyali Center to Nyali Beach where a beach cleaning activity
was held.
With this year's celebration theme as "A press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of Environment Crisis", the press team had a session with the public to educate them on the need of conserving the environment and more so the beach line.
The
celebrations were boosted by sponsorship from KPA and Bandari Sacco.
