Were excited his Olympic dream is nigh
National 400m Hurdles champion Wiseman Were is excited to
be heading to Paris for the Olympic Games this year, his maiden bow at the
world’s biggest sports extravaganza.
Were, who qualified for the 400m Hurdles race
earlier this year, says it will be a dream come true to compete at the
Olympics.
But even before he steps in Paris for the games, he
is already feeling the sense of achievement having qualified.
“It’s a great feeling for me as an athlete taking
part in 400m Hurdles at the Olympics. In this career I goals and it is a
process to reach such a milestone. It’s like building, a brick by brick we
build. I am thankful because I have never been in the Olympic Games before but
I have participated in the Commonwealth games.”
The 26-year old African Bronze medallist in the
400m Hurdles, is eyeing a podium finish at the Paris Games.
“My target is to go to the Olympics and make a
mark, I'm going as a competitor and to challenge other athletes as well. I
have been in World championships and into the semis so looking forward the
first thing is to see myself in the finals and from there we go for the best,”
he added.
Were however acknowledges there has been a myriad
of challenges in his journey to qualify for the Olympics, but is thankful to
have soldiered on thus far.
His immediate focus is the World Relays
Championships in the Bahamas this weekend, where he aims to contribute to Team
Kenya's qualification for the Olympics in the 4x400m relays.
