Bungoma Queens head coach Godfrey Mabonga has admitted that his side was thoroughly outclassed following a crushing 5-0 defeat to Ulinzi Starlets in the Women’s Premier League on Saturday.
Speaking to Citizen Digital after the weekend
thrashing, Mabonga criticized the performance of both his defense and attack
lines, stating that they failed to rise to the occasion in what turned out to
be one of their heaviest defeats this season.
“We were overpowered
and outclassed. The defence didn’t hold, and the attack lacked urgency,”
Mabonga said. “Ulinzi were clinical, and we just couldn’t match their
intensity.”
Despite the
setback, Mabonga remains focused on his season-long ambition — not necessarily
to clinch the national women’s top league title, but to steer Bungoma Queens
into a top-three finish. The head coach acknowledged the high level of
competition in the league and the challenges his team has faced against
well-drilled opponents.
“The goal is not
to win the league this season but to finish among the top three,” he stated.
“We’ve encountered some of the most competitive sides and with six matches
left, we have to bounce back stronger.”
After 16 matches
played, Bungoma Queens are placed fifth on the log with 25 points, trailing
league leaders Kenya Police Bullets by eight points. The margin highlights the
tight race at the top, with no room for further slip-ups if the Queens are to
achieve Mabonga’s top-three target.
