Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi clocked a world leading time of one minute, 42.80 seconds to win the men’s 800m and claim his maiden Diamond League trophy last night at the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon, USA.

The two-day event held at the Hayward Field brought to an end the 2023 Diamond League circuit that kicked off in May in Doha, Qatar.

Wanyonyi, the world silver medallist exacted a sweet revenge on the reigning world champion Marco Arop of Canada who finished second in 1:42.85 with DJamel Sedjati of Algeria finishing third in 1:43.06

The former world junior champion who lost to Arop at the World Championships in Budapest just under a month ago also notched a new personal best over the two-lap race.

“I really thank God for today’s victory as it was not easy. I am very happy to run a new personal best,” said Wanyonyi.

Commonwealth Games champion Beatrice Chebet finished second in the women’s 5000m race after clocking a new personal best of 14:05.92 behind Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay who triumphed in a new world record of 14:00.21, five seconds faster than the previous record set by Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon in June.

Chebet moved to third on the all-time list as she finished just outside the previous world record.

Mary Moraa could not replicate her world championships heroics in the women’s 800m as Athing Mu of USA reigned supreme in a world leading time of 1:54.97 as three women notched new personal bests and national records in the race.

Keely Hodgkinson of Great Britain placed second in 1:55.19 with Natoya Goule-Toppin of Jamaica settling for third in 1:55.96 as Moraa came home fourth in 1:57.42
