Kenya’s super middleweight champion Daniel Wanyonyi says he is ready for an epic clash with USA’s Kamron Humphrey, with the showdown set to headline an eight round World Alliance Boxing Association (WABA) duel dubbed 'Shujaa Wa Mashujaa'.
Two-time Commonwealth Games champion Lee McAllister of United Kingdom will also be among the high profile boxers who will battle in the mouthwatering title fights slated for March 16 at Kinoru Stadium, Meru County.
The former International Boxing Organisation light-welterweight champion will take on Amos Mwamakula of Tanzania.
Speaking on Wednesday, Wanyonyi said he would be counting on home support to trounce Kamron adding that he was ready to punish the American.
“I am fighting at home against a foreign boxer so I have the home support to my advantage.
“This is a great chance to fight with a boxer from America. It will be a good moment.”
Kenya Professional Boxing Commission president Reuben Ndolo said it was a big step for the organisers to include female boxers. Ndolo said the next stop with the new promoter will be in Malindi that also has never had any major boxing championship before.
“We are very proud of his this tournament. We thank our partners for coming on board and we look forward to see similar events in the future,” said Ndolo.
The fights will also act as a charity tournament to raise funds for the Greenland School For Girls in Meru that is offering teenage mothers a second chance in education.
Fight promoter, Gambian-American Edward Mendy, said they are glad to stage the bouts in Meru because the County has never had any major boxing tournament before.
"I believe involving Mukami (Charity) in the fight will inspire girls in Meru to embrace sports. Also holding the fights in Kenya is so special to me because Kenya is the land of my in-laws," said Mendy who is also the Lions Heart Boxing Productions Chief Finance Officer.
The one-day event that is set for March 16 in Meru, has attracted over 20 pugilists across the continent and beyond.
