Wanyama: Gusii Stadium ready to host national events
After successfully hosting the sixth edition of Kenya Inter-county Sports and Cultural Games (KICOSCA), Gusii Stadium is now set to host a series of national sporting activities.
Confirming the development, Kisii County Sports Director Samuel Wanyama said some Kenyan Premier League (KPL) clubs have approached the stadium management intending to use the facility as their home ground.
“The best way to exploit the facility is to have our own playing here and big teams regularly using the stadium. That way our own are able to see and tap something from the teams. Some KPL clubs have already knocked on our door,” he noted.
However, he could not specify the said clubs, noting details will be given at the materialisation of the deal.
The Stadium was officially opened last week by President Uhuru Kenyatta at the KICOSCA kick-off.
“During the President’s visit he promised the national Government will chip in some funds to help develop Gusii stadium into a more modern facility. We are hoping the process will be fast so that the planning is done within healthy timelines,” added Wanyama.
Meanwhile, former regional football giants Shabana FC will be using the pitch for their home matches, in their FKF Division League. Wanyama revealed the move adding being a community club, the ownership should be surrendered to County Government in fully.
“This is the only way we can be fully accountable, and track every move of the club,” he offered.
In a twist of events Athletics Kenya Public Relations Officer who is also the Kisii County AK chairman Evans Bosire is not happy with the Ministry of Sports in the county.
“Besides the stadium let the department show us what they have done in terms of promoting sports in the county. We have so much athletics talent but nothing substantial has been done to tap them. I challenge Governor Ongwae to leave a legacy of promoting talent development during his tenure, ” he said.
He blamed the department for failing to involve the AK federation in the preparation of the concluded KICOSCA games.
