Volleyball: Prisons edge KAPU to extend lead as GSU disarm Kenya Army

Prisons fell 3-2 sets to former champions GSU, their first defeat of the season before overcoming KAPU’s scare to claim two points and extend their lead at the apex of the men’s on 26 points.

The Dennis Mokua coached side were off to a flying start in the first set winning 25-14 before KAPU pulled the plug on the champions with a 25-20 win in the second set but the warders regroup to win the third set in 25-22.

Determined KAPU levelled matters again in fourth set with a 25-21 win to send the blockbuster match into the deciding set that saw Prisons held their nerves to scrape through with a 15-13 win in a match that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

‎‎Speaking after the match, Prisons captain Jairus Kipkosgey acknowledged the intensity of the game and the lessons learned.

“That was a tough match. We are still learning, and every team we have faced so far has been competitive. After winning the first set, my teammates relaxed, and the support from the fans really pushed Kapu.

“In this third leg of the season, we’ve faced stiff competition, and we now understand the importance of the right mindset. No more underestimating opponents because every team plays against us with the mentality of winning. Finishing third in East Africa has made our opponents even more determined to challenge us.”

KAPU were hoping to finally get a win against Kenya Prisons after suffering three consecutive defeats in the third leg that served off on Thursday.

They fell to Kenya Forest Service (KFS) on Saturday and Equity Bank on Friday, adding to their poor run despite glimpses of improvement in the second leg.

‎‎In other matches, GSU maintained their hundred-percent unbeaten record, defeating Kenya Army 3-0 sets (25-21, 25-21, 25-23).

Their disciplined display kept them on course for league success after a dramatic 3-2 sets win over Prisons Kenya on Saturday.

KDF overpowered Rift Valley Prisons with a dominant 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-23) win. Rift Valley Prisons showed some fight in the final set, but KDF remained in control.

‎‎Trailblazers produced a commanding performance, sweeping aside NYS in straight sets (25-13, 25-14, 25-16).

‎‎‎‎KPA continued their impressive form with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-22) victory over Western Prisons. The Mombasa-based side’s flawless display kept them in the title race.

‎‎The KVF Men's National League third leg wrapped up on Sunday, with teams now shifting focus to the upcoming Kenya Cup set to begin on February 15.
