Volleyball champs KCB ready for Kenya Cup tourney
The return of attacker
Juliana Namutira is expected to bolster Japheth Munala’s charges when the team
takes on Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in the inaugural Kenya Cup volleyball
tournament on Friday afternoon at the Nyayo Stadium.
KCB
has been paired in Pool B alongside rivals Kenya Pipeline, KDF, and Kenya Army
in the inaugural 5-month-long event to nurture talent and elevate the game in Kenya.
“We
had an excellent outing during the third leg of the Kenya Volleyball Federation
League. My players gave their all and stood out after their exemplary
performance on the court. I believe we will maintain the same focus and drive
as we take on KDF in the Kenya Cup Tournament,” said coach Japheth Munala.
Namutira,
who was named Most Valuable Player during the playoffs last season, missed the
third leg of the league following an ankle injury. The left attacker, who has
been sublime for Munala’s side since joining the team in 2023, will inject the
much-needed firepower.
She said, "I honestly feel much better after my injury. I hope I will help the team win against KDF. Traditionally, KDF has always played well whenever we face
them, so we expect a tough match.
“The girls are equal to
the task, and I believe we can kick off the Kenya Cup competition with a win.”
Fans
would likely see Carren Jelagat in Friday's fixture. The Libero recently joined
KCB from KDF. Youngsters Fridah Boke and Marlene Terry will also feature for
the bankers alongside regular starters Mercy Moim, Belinda Barasa, Edith Wisa
and Shirleen Maiywa.
In
the league, KCB is currently sitting fifth in the log standings behind Kenya
Pipeline, Prisons Kenya, detectives DCI and Postbank. The team has however
played fewer matches.
