Vivian Cheruiyot confident Kipyegon will break more records in Paris
Former world
10,000 meters champion Vivian Cheruiyot has tipped world 1500m record holder
Faith Kipyegon to bag a double at the Paris Olympic Games.
Speaking
ahead of the games in Paris, France, Cheruiyot said Kipyegon's recent
consistency in her performance makes her the favourite to win gold medals in
1500m and 5,000m, especially after breaking her own record in 1500 m.
“Her consistency in recent races makes her a top contender when it comes
to winning a double for 1500m and 5000m. It is all about
proper mark-timing which I think Faith has and
I know she will make us proud,” said Cheruiyot.
Cheruiyot, a
former Olympic gold medalist, also lauded Kipyegon for her discipline, which
she said is playing a key role in her success.
“This sport demands a lot of discipline from athletes and that one Faith has
maintained each and every time both in training and during races. This is something
that makes her standout,” added Cheruiyot, a former Olympic
record holder.
Cheruiyot has experience winning doubles at the Olympics, having bagged the silver medal in the 5,000m and bronze in the 10,000m at the 2012 London Olympics, as well as gold in the 5,000m and silver in the 10,000m at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Cheruiyot’s
sentiments were echoed by former 1500m world champion, Nancy Jebet Lagat.
“I didn’t know she attended
my home coming ceremony when she was a child it is good to know I inspired her
to be who she is at the moment and I am very proud of her achievements I hope
to see her achieve more,” stated Lagat, former 1500m gold medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
