Vihiga Queens banking on recruits to defend KWPL title
Vihiga Queens tactician Boniface Nyamunyamuh has hailed the arrival
of Emily Morang’a, Vivian Akinyi, and Cynthia Atieno, terming it as a show of
their determination to retain the Kenyan Women Premier League (KWPL) this
season.
The trio joined the four-time champions in the first leg of the
current campaign while at Nyakach Girls in Kisumu County, but now they are eligible
to play after completing their studies.
Morang’a made a highflying debut by netting four goals as Tumaini
Waliaula and Vivian Akinyi added one each to humble Wadadia 6-0 in their league
match played on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at Moi Stadium Kisumu.
The win cemented Queens’ supremacy as they sit on top of the apex
of the league with 24 points, five ahead of the second-placed Kenya Police
Bullets, while Ulinzi Starlets, Kibera Soccer Ladies, and Wadadia occupy third
to fifth positions in that order.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Nyamunyamuh termed the
trio as a good inclusion in the side, also hinting at their desire to rope in
five more players in the January transfer window.
“I want to congratulate my girls for the good fight to secure a
huge win against Wadadia. This means they used their festive season well.
“I was impressed by our new signings, Morang’a, whom we signed from
Nyakach together with Waliaula and Akinyi.
“They really displayed a very delicious football. For Morang’a I
think it’s a perfect replacement for Janet Moraa Bundi who joined Tanzania
heavyweights Yanga Princess last month.
“As a team, we still need to sign five more players to bolster the
squad in this January window.
“I have noted that we still have to work on the striking department as
well as defense which appeared to be a bit shaky.
“We have already started engaging them, and soon, we will unveil
them.
“Apart from Janet Bundi we also lost our forward Bertha Omita on
December 2023 who joined Sethu FC in Indian Women Premier league and those are
some of the replacement we are up to.”
Elsewhere, Kenya Police Bullets secured a 4-2 win against Bunyore Starlets at
Police Sacco Stadium as Madira Soccer Assassins fell 3-2 in the hands of Kibera
Soccer Ladies.
Gaspo women pulled a 1- 1 draw against Zetech Sparks at Stima Club
in Nairobi.
The clash pitting Bungoma Queens and Ulinzi Starlets, which was to
be played at Mumboha grounds on Saturday, was pushed to this Sunday after Queens lost
their midfielder Centrine Waswa, who was laid to rest on Saturday in her
parent’s home in Kimilili.
