VfB Stuttgart train Nyandarua teachers in sports
VfB plays in the German’s League Bundesliga and some of its coaches and trainers have pitched camp in Nyandarua to train school teachers on pertinent football skills they can use to nurture and develop talents.
This is the third cohort of trainees under the partnership and is intended to support local communities, embrace and also conserve the migratory birds and the use of sport is one of the forums that brings people together for a common interest.
“We have come here to assist the staff to improve their knowledge and to improve their skills and talents,” said David Mabuel, from VFB Stuttgart.
According to Bernard Walter from NABU, there is a need to discuss the preservation of the crane population as well as the region around Lake Ol’ Bolossat.
“You can’t do conservation work without talking to the local people, we have to talk to elders and many others why they should protect these birds and sports is one of the opportunities you can reach to many people.”
Speaking at the Ol-Joro Orok Stadium, the trainers called on both the county and national governments to collaborate with sports stakeholders in order to look into ways of enhancing sports for development.
David Wasrui from CCV said the use of sport was essential since it brings together young people from diverse backgrounds and uses the opportunity to sensitize them on the need to conserve the Cranes.
“Wee want to use teachers because most of the time they are with these children and are better placed to educate and give information on conservation matters.”
A unifying and inclusive force, sports are a key component of the 2030 Agenda and are instrumental in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
