Ulinzi Starlets crowned FKF Cup champions
Ulinzi Starlets have successfully retained the FKF Women Cup after hammering Nakuru City Queens 3-1 in the final, staged at the Nyayo National Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Mercy Airo emerged
the hero of the match, grabbing a brace in the 10th and 14th minutes
respectively as Neddy Atieno scored the third goal.
The consolation
goal for Ulinzi was scored by substitute Merceline Wafula.
The soldiers
were awarded Sh. 500,000 as Nakuru City Queens received Sh.100,000 only.
In an interview
with Citizen Digital, Ulinzi head
coach Joseph Wambua Mwanza hailed his charges for the determination as he
dedicated their win to their former chairman Lieutenant Col. Maina.
"It
is a great win for us which confirms we are the FKF Cup heroines, deserved for
that matter. I thank my players for the hard work and the good display. I also
thank the Kenya Defence Force (KDF) for the amazing support this season.
“I
also credit Mercy Airo for scoring two goals in the final, she was really pivotal
in our efforts to retain the title. We really thank our former chairman Lieutenant
Colonel Maina who has really been so supportive. He is the reason why we continue
shining in women football,” noted Wambua.
The
coach is already looking forward to a “bigger and better next season.”
“We
have won, so we now embark on beefing up our squad ahead of next season. We
cannot lower the standards, and we know we will have to work harder.”
Ulinzi finished third in the Kenya Women Premier League (KWPL), which was won by Vihiga Queens as Gaspo settled for the second position.
