Athletics Kenya (AK) President Jackson Tuwei has called on coaches
and officials to intensify preparations for Team Kenya ahead of the 7th World
Athletics Relays, scheduled for May 10–11, 2025, in Guangzhou, China.
Speaking during the official unveiling of the team and technical
staff, Tuwei emphasized the importance of technical excellence, especially in
baton exchanges and overall coordination, areas that have previously cost the
country crucial victories.
“There are only three weeks to train and ensure proper
coordination. Relays are won or lost at the baton exchange. From what we’ve
seen today, there is a lot of work to be done. Officials, we need you to polish
every detail. You can be beaten by the smallest of mistakes, the worst is to
drop the baton itself, said Tuwei.
He cited Kenya’s heartbreaking experience at the 2022
Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where a mishandled baton exchange between
Samwel Imeta and Dan Kiviasi dashed the men’s 4x100m team’s medal hopes.
“The baton wasn’t exchanged properly. We lost it at the
changeover. I remember that moment clearly, our team just dropped the baton,
and all our hopes fell with it,” he noted.
Mike Mokamba and Ferdinand Omanyala, who were on the third and
anchor legs, could only watch as hosts England claimed victory in 38.35
seconds.
Despite past challenges, Tuwei expressed confidence in the newly
named technical team led by Kennedy Tanui. The coaching panel comprises Simon
Riga, Catherine Kagwiria, Stanley Towett, and Thomas Musembi, with Edwin Kiptoo
serving as the team physiotherapist.
Kenya will compete in four events: the men’s 4x100m relay, the
men’s and women’s 4x400m relays, and the 4x400m mixed relay.
“We are happy with the selection process. This team will carry
our flag in China. Kenya has a proud history at the World Relays, and although
the formats have changed over time, from 4x1500m and 4x800m, we continue to
evolve and adapt,” said Tuwei.
The selected squad of 21 athletes is expected to report to a residential training camp this week. The Guangzhou event will also serve as a qualifier for the World Athletics Championships set for September in Tokyo, Japan.
