Tusker players have to stay ‘sober’ for decisive KPL second leg-Kibwage
Kibwage says the second half of the season is always tough, and that the Brewers must avoid dropping points easily, referencing a last-day miss out on the title when Gor Mahia pipped them for the 2022/2023 title with only one-point difference.
In that season, Tusker lost 2-1 to Gor Mahia on February 8, 2023 and then fell 1-0 to Nzoia Sugar later on April 22, 2023 with the two losses making the difference in the title race, according to Kibwage.
Tusker are currently in good run in the FKF Premier League, sitting second in the standings with 33 points level with Police FC who have a superior goal difference.
The 13-time champions had won the league back-to-back in the previous two seasons (2020/2021, 2021/2022) before the run was snapped by Gor Mahia, who have held the grip since.
The Brewers have finished runners up in two consecutive years but Kibwage is urging his colleagues to step up in the decisive second half of the season.
“It was a very sad moment to the entire team because the effort we put in to make sure we won three titles in-a-row did not bear fruits. At the same time, we had a chance of winning the Premier League and FKF Cup, but at the end of the season we did not take anything home,” Kibwage recounted.
“Chasing two titles made us run out of gas. Nonetheless, we are in another season whereby once again we still have a chance of redeeming ourselves in both the League and in the Cup competition.”
“We’ve learned from our mistakes, and we are fully focused on ensuring the title remains in our hands this time,” he vowed.
The former AFC Leopards and Sofapaka defender has underlined the team's resolve to ending their title drought and restoring glory to the club.
The Charles Okere-led team boast one of the league’s fine sharpshooters in Ryan Ogam, who has taken the league by storm notching 15 goals in 13 matches to lead the top scorer charts.
