Tusker gaffer Okere backs Onchwari to cement starting berth

Tusker coach Charles Okere has heaped praise on defender Alex Onchwari, who joined from Muhoroni Youth at the start of the season, urging him to work harder to secure a permanent spot in the starting lineup.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Okere emphasized that every player has their moment and expressed satisfaction with Onchwari’s performance.

"Onchwari is an important player in our defence. In our match against KCB (played on Sunday, February 2, 2025) he delivered a strong performance. However, at Tusker, we don’t rely on just one player, we count on the entire squad,” Okere said.

“Every player has their time, and I’m glad his has come. He utilized it well, and as a coach, I encourage him to keep pushing for more game time this season," he added.

The former Zoo FC defender was handed a starting role against KCB, stepping in for the injured Tom Teka this is after a seven-month wait since joining the Brewers in July last year.

Onchwari impressed with a solid defensive display, helping the team secure its sixth clean sheet of the season.

Grateful for the opportunity, Onchwari expressed his determination to maintain his place in the squad.

"I’m incredibly thankful to finally get my chance to play. I appreciate the technical bench for believing in me. I’ve waited for this moment for so long, and now that it’s here, I’ll keep working hard to stay in the team,” Onchwari said in a previous interview.

Onchwari, who began his football career with local side Ololulung’a, also played the full 90 minutes in Tusker’s most recent match against Kenya Police FC, helping the team keep yet another clean sheet.
