Tusker FC’s Balecho thrilled by national team call-up for World Cup qualifiers

Tusker FC forward Eric Balecho in action during a past KPL match.
The former Murang’a Seal winger, who first received a national team call-up in 2023 but was later dropped from the traveling squad alongside Moses Shumah and Geoffrey Ochieng, is determined to seize the opportunity this time.
"I feel great to be called up to the national team, and I’m truly grateful for this opportunity," Balecho told Citizen Digital.
"This being my second time, I thank God for how far I have come. The most important thing is to keep learning, whether in attack or defense, because it helps me grow as a player."
Balecho had a slow start at Tusker but has recently found his form, netting a crucial goal in a 1-1 draw against Shabana in the FKF Premier League.
His impressive performances earned him a spot in head coach Benni McCarthy’s 32-man provisional squad for the upcoming qualifiers.
McCarthy, who recently took over the Harambee Stars, acknowledged the role of his predecessor, Francis Kimanzi, and other local coaches in helping him select the squad.
"I didn’t have the chance to watch many games or gain extensive knowledge about the players," McCarthy admitted.
"I had to rely on coach Francis and the coaching staff, who have been integral to the team. I also reviewed some videos. While it’s not the ideal situation, given the limited time, I’m grateful I did, as I might have overlooked a hidden talent," he added.
Kenya will kick off their qualifiers against Gambia on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at Stade Alassane Ouattara in Ivory Coast. They will then return home to host Gabon on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi.
