UON
Terror beat Strathmore Blades 75-74 in overtime of their first leg tie in
the Kenya Basketball Premier League match played at the Strathmore University
Sports Complex on Sunday.
The quarterly scores
were as follows; 1st quarter: 16-10 UoN, second 18-24, 3rd 20-15, 4th 10-15 ,
Overtime 10-11 , Final 75-74 UON Terror.
The Terror, under the
shepherding of coach Genga Eugene took a quick start in the first quarter
going up six ( 16-10) but were met by the Blades second quarter avalanche 24-18
who evened the score heading into the half at 34-34.
As the old adage in
the sport goes that " basketball is a game of runs", the spirited
Terror staged yet another run of their own in the third quarter 20-15 to go up
five; setting up thriller finish in the fourth and overtime periods that
ensued.
The Blades came out
swinging for the fences in that fourth quarter, going on a 15-10 run although
it was not enough to put away their university counterparts who almost won it
at the buzzer.
This was after Guard
Powell Hargos effort rimmed out to set the stage for a thriller finish in
overtime with wins at stake for either side.
The engaged,
passionate and emotional crowd who thronged the Strathmore Sports Complex were
well aware of what lay in store for their sides in the overtime period as they
waited with bated breathes as their sides walked back into the hardwood to see
the game out.
As finishes go, the
overtime was a thriller, with both sides taking turns marching each other's
score by score.
The Terror saw their nine-point lead erased after Blades' guard Dennis Joseph went on a eight-point run by himself hitting back to back three pointers and a crafty right handed layup to move them within two.
It was not enough
though as the Terror would maintain composure through forward Chan Isaiah who
hit clutch free throws to seal the win 75-74 snatching home court advantage in
the first leg of the pairs' matchup even as the Premier League continues to
wrap up the first legs of the season.
