AFC Leopards is on the path to a major structural transformation, with plans to shift from a society-run club to a Mixed Ownership Model.

The proposal is part of the Taskforce Report formed by the club last year and which has made the far-reaching recommendation, which will now be put to vote at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) slated for the end of March 2025, where members and the board will either approve or reject the proposed changes.

If ratified, the new structure will balance traditional and modern football management. The proposed Mixed Ownership Model will see the club’s Members' Sacco retain a 51% majority stake, ensuring fan ownership remains central, while the Board will take control of the remaining 49% of shares.

Addressing the media, club chairman Dan Shikanda said the model is designed to safeguard democracy within the club, granting members the power to elect board representatives and hold them accountable.

“We have the old constitution, the one we are using now, once you are a member, you have the mandate to elect leadership and two, to get a better discount on your merchandise. Only those two, but we hope going forward, they'll be more and more incentives and more because each members usually ask us, what is in for us."

The transformation is expected to open new financial opportunities for Leopards by attracting strategic investments into the club’s brand and football operations.

According to the taskforce report, Leopards’ nominal value stands at an estimated Ksh2 billion, reflecting factors such as sporting performance, fan loyalty, commercial potential, and rich history.

The proposed structure could redefine the club’s future by providing much-needed resources for player development, infrastructure improvement, and overall competitiveness in Kenyan and continental football. However, the final decision now rests with the members, who will cast their votes at the upcoming AGM, determining whether the club embraces change or sticks to its traditional setup.

With the clock ticking towards March, all eyes are now on AFC Leopards as it prepares for one of the most pivotal moments in its 60-year history. Will the members usher in a new era, or will tradition hold firm?
