Strathmore University basketball team B, who were promoted to the Kenya men’s basketball premier league, has relinquished the opportunity to join the top tire league.

The team has, therefore, decided to be a feeder team to Strathmore team A which has been playing in the premier league for a long time.

Their position will be filled by the ABSA team that finished second runners-up in the Division One side, joining USIU that won the Division One side in the top league.

Strathmore head coach Tony Ochieng said they decided to step down their B team to give them time to concentrate on one team in the premier league. He also noted that the decision will also allow them to promote some players from team B to the senior side.

“Strathmore B is more of a development team, a feeder team to the main team. It is a good development side that has helped us feed the main team,” Ochieng’ said.

“The players coming to our senior team are very competitive. This time around, we are very serious; we are going for nothing but the championship. All we need to do to achieve this is to fill all the positions with three competitive players,” he added.

The Strathmore Blades senior team has harvested Nwodo Jayson, Mwangi Washington, Jack Waweru and Daniel Bol from their junior team ahead of the new season.

At the same time, Ochieng said Strathmore B has also gotten three new players from the internal tournaments adding they are still searching for two more players from high school to beef up the developmental side.

“I will do some recruitment to feed up the developmental side. We are looking to add two or three players from either internally from our internal tournaments or the high school,” Ochieng said.

So far, Ochieng’s side has added three new players to their team B. The players include Tuheri Junior, Abdi Musa and Ken Nyoki.

Meanwhile, Ochieng believes his side is ready for the new season after having a great pre-season where they have won all their matches.

He says though they have lost their three players: Darril Omondi and Garang Ding, who have joined Thunder, and Bol Kerubino, who have gone to the United States of America for studies, they are confident of starting the league on a high note.

“The preparations have been awesome; we had three tournaments where we won all our matches. From these results, I can conclude that pre-season has been good, and we are all fit. Though we have lost three key players, all our remaining players are in good shape, we are set and looking forward to the new season,” Ochieng said.
