Strathmore University’s women hockey team, the Scorpions, are eyeing back-to-back wins in the Kenya Hockey Union Women’s Premier League following their narrow 3-2 triumph over Mombasa Sports Club (MSC) at Dashmesh Stadium in Nairobi over the weekend.

Team captain Diana Awino expressed confidence that the team can build on the win as they prepare for a challenging encounter against Kisumu Queens next weekend.

“Kisumu Queens is not an easy opponent, but we will give it our all. I’m sure everyone is eager to win,” said Awino.

The Scorpions, who finished second in the league last season, currently sit fifth on the table with six points from three matches. Their win against MSC marked their second victory of the season. Early goals from Rebecca Nasambu in the seventh minute and Grace Bwire in the 15th gave Strathmore a 2-1 lead at halftime. Bwire returned in the second half to score her second goal of the game, securing all three points for the university side.

Awino attributed the win to their effective execution of short corners.

“We focused on short corners—we had four and scored three goals from them. Scoring three out of four is quite something,” she noted.

Despite the loss, MSC captain Esther Mwikali remained upbeat. Mwikali scored both goals for her team, one in each half, and praised her teammates for their effort against one of the league’s top sides.

“The result wasn’t what we wanted, but we are proud of the performance. We usually train on grass, which is very different, and playing against a big team like Strathmore is a learning opportunity. We’re not losing hope—we’ll keep our heads high because nothing comes easy,” said Mwikali.

Currently, Blazers Hockey Club lead the women’s premier league standings with nine points from three matches. Kisumu Queens also have nine points but have played one game more.

Strathmore will now turn their focus to their upcoming clash against Kisumu Queens, aiming to climb further up the table and reassert themselves as title contenders.
