Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has warned that Sunday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Gabon at Nyayo National Stadium will be a challenging encounter.
Speaking during the team’s final preparations at Kasarani on Saturday, McCarthy acknowledged Gabon’s strength as the second-placed team in Group F, while expressing confidence in his squad’s ability to rise to the occasion.
“It’s going to be a tough game. Gabon is number two in Group F, and they’ve shown dominance. From our last game against Gambia, the boys demonstrated their capabilities. Of course, Gabon have Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has proven himself at big clubs like Arsenal, Dortmund, and Barcelona, but we are planning everything accordingly,” McCarthy said during the pre-match press conference.
The South African tactician also hinted at potential changes to the starting lineup following Thursday’s thrilling 3-3 draw with Gambia. Bajaber Mohammed, Jonah Ayunga, William Lenkupae, and Masud Juma, who all came off the bench in that match, could feature from the start against Gabon.
McCarthy praised their impact, noting, “The substitutes who came on in the second half brought a lot of energy and a positive mindset. Two of them even found the back of the net, so I’ll be relying on them. They have what it takes to deliver the performance we’re aiming for.”
Goalkeeper Ian Otieno, who stood out in the Gambia match, echoed his coach’s optimism.
“Preparations have been solid, and everybody is ready. We’re happy to be home for a while, and tomorrow we vow to give our best. We still stand a chance, and everyone is fully focused,” Otieno said.
William Lenkupae, who scored after coming off the bench against Gambia, expressed his excitement about the opportunity.
“It’s an amazing achievement for me. My family has been supportive, and this has been a dream. I knew this was a great team, and there’s a lot more we can achieve. Fans should expect possession-based, attacking football and plenty of goals ahead of tomorrow’s game against Gabon,” he said.
Harambee Stars are eager for their 2026 World Cup qualification journey with a victory over Gabon on Sunday. The team will then host Gambia and Seychelles in September before travelling to Burundi and Ivory Coast in October.
With preparations in full swing, McCarthy and his squad are determined to make a strong statement at Nyayo Stadium with fans set to occupy the stadium fully.
