The
stage is set for this year’s African Road Cycling Championship scheduled for
October 9-13 in Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet counties.
Speaking
on Citizen TV’s Sporty Monday programme, Kenya Cycling Federation CEO Kelvin
Mwangi said every preparation has been completed and the country will be ready
for the showdown.
“The stage
is ready for the showdown. Everything is well prepared and the excitement is
building up, we are pleased for the opportunity to host this prestigious event
in the country,” said Mwangi.
Kenya
will be represented by 42 cyclists, led by top cyclist Nancy Akinyi Debe, who
will also double up as Team Kenya captain, and the CEO says the team that has
been training in Murang'a County, is set to go head to head with their
opponents.
“The
team has been training in Muranga for some time and they are excited and ready
to take on the world. They believe in themselves and this has seen them harvest
many medals,” added Mwangi.
Mwangi hailed the event as a milestone for the
growth of cycling in Kenya, adding that the Eldoret City’s climate and a
well-developed road network hold tremendous potential to unlock a cycling
culture in the region.
“This
game is growing very much so the fact that the organizers trust us with the
opportunity to host it means we are heading in the right direction and bigger
things are coming,” stated the federation CEO.
The
competition is set to attract over 20 countries with the Eritrean Tour de
France Green Jersey champion Biniam Girmay the big favourite.
