National Super League debutants SS Assad are currently carrying out trials as they seek to bolster their squad, ahead of their new season.

Speaking at their Ukunda Show training base, head coach Ali Marumu said that they will select players through match situations as they are set to play a series of friendlies, from Wednesday to Sunday.

“I always believe in looking at players in a game situation, so we will monitor the new recruits from the week long matches as will play local teams,” said Marumu.

Among the new players they are targeting is Alex Mwalimu from Malindi who was the second best scorer in the just concluded Division One league (21), featuring for Young Bulls from Kilifi County.

“Discussions are in a good stage and we hope to rope him in so that he can boost our attack department. He has showed that he can be of good value going into the second biggest football league in the country,” added Marumu.

The former Harambee Stars defender has at the same time assured their supporters that they are ready to fight for a slot in the Premier League next season.

“We are going to compete and not just participate in NSL, so our fans should just believe in us like last season.”

The ‘Lions of Ukunda’ defeated Luanda Villa 2-1 a fortnight ago to qualify for the National Super League for the first time alongside Naivas and Mara Sugar.

Assad are scheduled to open their NSL campaign against Murang’a Seals away in Murang’a on November 6 before a home game against Fortune Sacco.
