For the first time in history, Mwamba RFC will play second-tier rugby after being relegated from the Kenya Cup. Despite a commanding 29-15 victory over Black Blad in the weekend, the club could not escape the drop, marking a painful chapter for one of Kenya’s most iconic rugby teams.

Founded in 1977 to promote rugby among indigenous Kenyans, Mwamba has been home to some of the nation’s greatest players, including the Asego brothers Larry, Lavin and Chris, Collins Injera, Humphrey Kayange, Dan Sikuta, and Kenya Sevens coach Kevin Wambua.

Following the devastating relegation, Mwamba RFC captain Bruce Shiemi delivered a heartfelt message to the club’s fans, acknowledging the pain and vowing to lead the team’s resurgence.

“It breaks my heart to say that we have fallen short. We fought, we gave our all, but in the end, it wasn’t enough. Relegation is a painful reality, one that we never imagined for this great club.

“I know how much this team means to you, our fans, members, and everyone who has stood with us through thick and thin. We share your pain. We feel your disappointment.”

Shiemi praised his teammates for their dedication and resilience throughout the season despite the setbacks they faced.

“To my teammates, I have seen the sweat, the sacrifice, and the passion you’ve poured into every match.

“This season tested us in ways we never expected, but I am proud of every one of you. To our fans, you never wavered.

“Through every battle, you stood by us, cheered for us, and believed in us even when the results didn’t go our way. We owe you more.”

In a rallying call to Mwamba supporters, the captain reassured them that the club will rise again.

“Mwamba is built on resilience, on the will to rise no matter how hard we fall. This is not the end. We will rebuild, we will fight, and we will be back.

“The journey back to the Kenya Cup begins now. Stay with us. Believe in us. Because Mwamba is more than just a team we are family, we are history, and we are not done yet.”

With their captain’s words serving as motivation, Mwamba RFC now prepares for the battle ahead, determined to reclaim their place among Kenya’s rugby elite.
