Sisters-in-arms: Siblings Nancy and Brigid Barasa ready to conquer at KCB
Reigning Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) National Women’s Volleyball League champions KCB are kick-starting their 2025 season on January 25 with a match against Nairobi Prisons then face KDF the following day at the Nyayo Indoor Arena.
However, the incredible story of Nancy and Brigid Barasa —the girls who once shared a bedroom until their secondary school years, sharing the same jersey with KCB as twin-sister-players will unfold on Saturday.
The unique story of Nancy and Brigid sharing a team is not new in the volleyball circles after the twin sisters etched the name of Rift Valley’s Kesogon Secondary School in the annals of volleyball history after they helped their school to win first ever East Africa title last year.
Kesogon finally got one up on five-time champions Kwanthanze with a 3-0 sets rout to lift their maiden regional title following two consecutive years of heartache in the hands of the Machakos-based team.
Nancy, a setter and Barasa, who plays as a left attacker caught the attention of KCB, who were quietly following their progress and then snapped them up just a month after clearing Form Four.
“They are very good players and both share one resolve of becoming very successful in volleyball. We will mould them to become the best in their positions and in return KCB will also reap big from them,” said KCB technical Director Paul Bitok.
By signing the duo, the Bankers are staying head and shoulders above the rest as they seek to ward off competition from their arch-rivals in their bid for a third successive league title.
As she starts the professional journey in volleyball with KCB, Nancy says she is excited to put on the jersey of the former African Club Championship winners.
“I will maintain my standards of discipline and dedication both in training and on the court. KCB have promised to support our education and I will not let them down on the court,” said Nancy.
Echoing her sister’s sentiments, Brigid said: “Just as KCB supported me academically, I aim to contribute as a setter and help the team excel.”
Bitok, who doubles up as the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) deputy president, revealed that the club has undertaken to sponsor talented students at Kesogon, Kwanthanze and Soweto —three most successful schools in the sport.
“Through our foundation, we will identify the talented students and support their education. Even those who we’ve already picked and want to further their studies beyond secondary school, we will support them too.”
In addition to the Barasa sisters, KCB also signed Kwanthanze’s Frida Boke and Malyne Terry.
The duo has seamlessly integrated with the team’s experienced players as KCB strives to solidify its dominance in local and regional volleyball competitions.
Boke, who dreams of an international career, expressed her aspirations: “I pray to God to help me rise to a different level and succeed in playing abroad. But one must first establish themselves at home before spreading their wings.”
With this infusion of young talent and the unwavering commitment of seasoned players, KCB team is poised to reach new heights and continue its legacy of excellence.
