Nineteen-year-old golf sensation Shannon Tan from Singapore made a remarkable debut on the Ladies European Tour (LET) by clinching victory at the 2024 Magical Kenya Ladies Open.

Tan's final round of 3 under par 70 secured her a total score of 12 under par 280, edging out her nearest competitor, Alessandra Fanali from Italy, by four shots and making history as Singapore’s first LET winner.

Tan kicked off her final round with an impressive start, sinking three birdies in the first five holes. Though a minor setback occurred at the par-five sixth, she quickly regained momentum with a birdie on the seventh, ending the front nine with a total of 35. The back nine showcased her resilience as she played bogey-free, securing another crucial birdie on the par-5 11th to seal her triumph.

Having been the first player from Singapore to secure a full LET card, Tan's journey to professionalism was marked by determination and perseverance.

Reflecting on her win, Tan emphasized her adherence to her game plan throughout the tournament, stating, “I stuck to my game plan, just trying to hit every fairway and every green I can.”

Her decision to turn professional just before the event underscored the challenges she faced, but Tan remained steadfast in her pursuit of excellence.

Commenting on her victory, she expressed pride in inspiring junior players in Singapore, stating, “Juniors back home now know that it is possible, and they know anything is possible.”

Tan's outstanding performance not only earned her the title but also a substantial prize purse of KES 7.9 million (€45,000), 500 LET order of merit points, and a coveted spot in the prestigious Aramco Saudi Ladies International presented by PIF.

Meanwhile, Alessandra Fanali, the runner-up, displayed commendable skill and resilience throughout the tournament, finishing with a score of 8-under par 284.

Despite narrowly missing the top spot, Fanali remained optimistic, stating, “Today, I tried it, I gave myself a chance... Next week is another week.”

The podium also featured a five-way tie for third place, showcasing the international diversity and competitive spirit of the event.

The 2024 Magical Kenya Ladies Open, held at the PGA Baobab Course in Vipingo Ridge, attracted 108 golfers from 36 nations and was broadcast live globally.

Sponsored by prominent entities including the Government of Kenya, Safaricom’s MPesa, and Huawei, the tournament celebrated the intersection of sport, culture, and international cooperation.
