Strathmore Blades Head Coach Tony Ochieng is an impressed man after his overcame newcomers NBK Phoenix 69-58 over the weekend, in a Kenya National Basketball League match played at the Nyayo Gymnasium.

The win saw the students win their first match of the season, which helped them to position seven in the league standings after five outings.

Indeed, it was a sigh of relief for Ochieng, having lost four matches previously in what he acknowledges has been a tough start.

However, with the win, Ochieng thinks his players can use the opportunity to psyche themselves to more victories.

“The win was fantastic. It was a very important win for the team, and I really like how the players showed hunger for it.

"One thing I liked about the boys is that we had the right attitude from the start to the finish, and we dominated both defensively and offensively. Things worked well. Players from the bench also brought some positive energy,”Ochieng said.

He continued:

“We were very good at the shots, we shot at 67% on open shots at 70% from free throws and I am really happy for that kind of a show. It really motivates me for the next game."

Ochieng however knows there is still more work to do as he seeks to stabilise his team.

“We need to work on the free throws as well as how to make a kill from blunders, we missed several breaks due to poor decisions but I believe the boys will get better. It is clear to me that we are going to adjust some situations as we look forward to face Umoja next, which is a very good team,” Ochieng added.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), Umoja and Eldonets Platinum top the table with nine points each after five games, winning four and losing one each.
