Shujaa fall to Fiji and New Zealand at Perth 7s

The national rugby sevens team, Shujaa, fell 21-14 to Fiji to register their second consecutive defeat at the Perth Sevens that kicked off Friday morning in Australia.

Shujaa squandered a 14-7 lead against Fiji to suffer the loss following a false start in the Pool C opener earlier on, going down 29-14 against New Zealand.

The two defeats left Kenya rooted to the bottom of the group on a negative 22-point difference and remained ninth place in the overall standings on 11 points, 25 adrift of leaders Fiji after three legs.

In the Fiji tie, Shujaa started strongly as Nygel Amaitsa danced his way to score the first try and then successfully converted it to hand his side a 7-0 lead.

Fiji got back in the game with a try to Joji Nasova after some nice plays by Joseva Talacolo and Filipe Sauturaga to level 7-7.

They built momentum minutes before halftime but were beaten at the ruck giving away precious possession as Edmund Asati dashed the whitewash to score the second try with a successful conversion from Amaitsa as Shujaa led 14-7 at the break.

Fiji came back with a renewed energy as they stepped up with their one-on-one tackles, keeping possession and made use of their chances.

Offloads after offloads and Fiji managed to break through with Joseva Talacolo scoring a crucial try to level the scores 14-14.

With less than two minutes to play, Nasova sliced through the Kenya defence to score and give Fiji 21-14 lead as they held on to win the match.

Shujaa next face Uruguay, who beat New Zealand 14-12, in their second match to top the group.
