Shadrack Maluki,
the Kenya Judo Federation boss, has been elected the new NOC-K president, in
the delayed elections held Monday at a city hotel in Nairobi.
Maluki, who previously served as the
committee's first vice president, won with a majority of 15 votes, beating
outgoing Secretary General Francis Mutuku who garnered 12 votes. Maluki takes
over from Paul Tergat whose term of service lapsed after being in office for
two terms of four years each.
In a closely contested race for the First Deputy President position, Barnaba Korir of Athletics Kenya took the spot with 15 votes, edging out Anthony ‘Jamal’ Otieno from the Boxing Federation who secured 12 votes.
The elections
saw 13 positions being contested, with three candidates running unopposed: John
Ogolla from Weightlifting as Secretary General, Charles Mose from Cycling as
Deputy Treasurer, and legendary athlete Eliud Kipchoge as the Male Athlete
Representative.
The new leadership team is expected to drive Kenya's sports agenda, building on the country's rich Olympic heritage.
Maluki's victory
marks a new chapter for NOC-K, with many expecting his experience and
leadership skills to propel Kenyan sports to greater heights. With Kipchoge's
involvement, the team is sure to have a strong athlete-centric approach. As the
new team takes the reins, Kenyans are eagerly watching to see how they will
perform on the global stage.
In the meantime, former Kenya Rugby Union chairman Alexander "Sasha" Kiplagat Mutai was elected alongside Joyceline Nyamburu and Suleiman Sumba to serve as Committee Representatives.
