What began as a modest four-team affair in
2015 has reached its triumphant peak, Senende High School delivered the upset
of the year, stunning national giants Kakamega High School 12-10 to
win the U19 boys’ title at the final edition of the Western Black Rock
Tournament held in Kakamega.
Tournament Director, Matayo
Mwenesi, reflected on the emotional journey of the 10-year project, which
hosted 33 teams this year across four categories: 12 U19 boys, 14 U19 girls,
four U15 boys, and three U15 girls.
“It started as a small tournament in 2015 with 4 schools, we have
come a long way to where we are now,” said Mwenesi in an interview with Citizen
digital.
“My goal was to have Western become more
competitive by playing more games against more diverse opponents, and I believe
between then and now, Western has cemented its place as the most dominant
region in Kenya.”
Senende’s victory was symbolic toppling Kakamega School, a powerhouse in school rugby, was not just a win, but a statement on the growing depth of talent in the region.
They had earlier
thrashed Chavakali 2 (31-00) in the group stage and edged past Kakamega 2
(12-05) in the semis before the gritty final win over Kakamega 1.
On the girls’ side, Kinale Girls capped off
a dominant campaign by beating St. Joseph’s 14-07 in the final, further
highlighting the competitive growth among female teams in the region.
The 2024 edition stood out not only for the
quality of competition but also for its international flair and participation.
“This year's tournament was the best as it
had a real international outlook and very competitive sides,” said Mwenesi.
“Securing sponsorship has been a huge challenge, but I'm happy we pulled
through.”
He extended gratitude to those who kept the
dream alive over the years.
“Thanks to Patrice Agunda for sending some
balls, Scrummage and Citizen for coverage, Friends of Black Rock, and family
and former schoolmates for supporting us through the years.”
As Black Rock bows out in its 10th and final edition, Mwenesi said the future is open to whatever will be.
