Select team from Owalo Super Cup to play Gor Mahia
Information and Communication Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo has announced that a selection of 22 players from the ongoing Eliud Owalo Super Cup will face 20-time KPL champions Gor Mahia in an exhibition match on Saturday at the Nyilima Grounds in Asembo, Siaya County.
The five-day tournament sponsored by the CS through the Eliud Owalo foundation seeks to nurture talent from the grassroots and will culminate Thursday evening at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, Mamboleo with a showdown between Kisumu and Homa Bay combined.
"At the end of the day based on the objective, to us both teams have won
because we have realised the purpose of identifying talents that can be
nurtured to a higher level.
"As these matches are going on, we have got a technical committee here led
by Tobias Ochola, James Goro Oronge and Gerald Omolo among others
who are identifying the two best players in each position.
"This will give us a Nyanza combined team that will play against Gor Mahia on December 30 at Nyilima Stadium in Asembo, Rarieda Sub-County," said Owalo.
The tournament features four teams representing four counties from the Nyanza
region namely Kisumu, Homa Bay, Siaya and Migori counties.
Homa Bay earned a place in the final after edging Migori 2-1 in the opening
match at the Raila Odinga Stadium while Kisumu thrashed Siaya 3-0 to book their
spot in the final with the winner poised to walk away with a Sh.1 million
cash prize.
Third place play-offs pit Siaya County against Migori County at the same venue
prior to the final fixture.
