The Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) Friday threw a spanner in the works by stopping the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) elections for non-compliance with the federation’s laws and Sports Act.

According to the John Ohaga-led tribunal the polls could not go on after only four counties had met the legal requirements to participate in the election of National Executive Committee (NEC) in KVF forcing the tribunal to stop the Saturday, April 29 polls.

The federation constitution requires officials elected from 47 counties participate in the election of the national office of the sport with the 14 claimants successfully arguing that the absence of the county based branch delegates, the Saturday event was nullity.

The SDT further extended the term of the current KVF office bearers for three more months and directed that branch elections of the sport must be held first before the Annual General Meeting (AGM) is held on July 29 when the national executive committee will be elected.

KVF had urged the tribunal to strike out the petition and allow the elections to go on as planned to avoid possible embargos from the international bodies.

Failure to hold the polls within the stipulated time, the international volleyball bodies could come down hard on Kenya by throwing out the national women's volleyball team, Malkia Strikers, from international competitions like the FIVB Challenger Cup in July and Africa Nations Championship in August.

Both championships will also serve as the qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
