Scores injured as fans cause chaos in national secondary schools football match in Kisii
Several
people were injured after fans caused chaos during a match between Nyanza
region football champions, Koderobara Secondary School and Musingu High
School in the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national ball
games at the Gusii Stadium, Kisii County.
The rowdy
fans started throwing objects into the field after Musingu scored a goal,
causing the match officials to suspend the match for 30 minutes to ensure police
brought the situation under control.
The injured
in the running battles between police and fans received first aid at the venue
courtesy of first aid responders.
The match
resumed and ended with Musingu emerging the winners and eliminating their
opponents at the group stages.
A similar incident was witnessed in a match
between Koderobara and
Machakos Boys on Monday evening at the same stadium, after the centre referee cancelled Koderobara’s goal, claiming it was scored as the
goalkeeper was still lying down injured.
Musingu head coach Brendan Mwinamo condemned the incident, but at the same time expressed optimism he will return the school to its former glory by clinching the national title they last won in 1984.
"It's been a long time, but 'ni bidii' (it's hard work) and we thank God as well, it's not easy to get here. I just want to promise our supporters that we will give our best, but we are not coming here as visitors, we want to be the national champions," said Mwinamo.
In another match, Highway Secondary defeated Takaba 1-0, with coach Beldine Odemba expressing confidence in her charges to produce better results in the remaining matches.
"We've come to represent Nairobi and represent them well. So we are waiting for tomorrow's match which will decide who goes to the final. My boys are up to the task and I've never doubted them at any point in this competition, so we'll push on tomorrow," she noted.
St Josephs humiliated Dr Aggrey 6-0, while Machakos played to a goalless draw with Kirangari in the other matches.
Highway tops Pool A, followed by St Anthonys as Takaba
remain at the bottom of the pool after losing all their preliminary matches.
Kirangari from Central Kenya has also proceeded to the semis and will meet
Highway on
Wednesday as well.
