Nairobi champions Highway sunk St. Joseph's Kitale 1-0 to begin their quest for the football national title on a promising note, as the Term Two Secondary School Games kicked off in Kisii on Sunday.

In a fully packed Gusii Stadium, the Beldine Odemba-coached side showed calmness against the Rift Valley champions, to clinch the important win which the coach says was well deserved.

"We came in knowing how good they are, being the champions of Rift Valley and so we had to give our all. We got the basics right, and here we go onto the next one," said the Harambee Starlets coach, who also coaches the Kenya Women Premier League champions Police Bullets.

Highway Chief Principal Irungu Nduati lauded his boys for the composure they exhibited against their rivals, saying they are now more confident going into the second match on Monday.

"We have started well. We were prepared for them and the win means a lot to us ahead of our match against Dr. Aggrey. The approach is a game at a time, no pressure. We have the quality needed to go all the way," said Irungu.

The opening match between Nyanza's Kodero Bara and Kirangari High from Central ended on  2-2 draw. Kodero Bara head coach Moses Otieno is hopeful they win in their second match against Musingu High.
"We expected to win but the draw does not deflate our morale. Instead, it is a warning to our next opponents, we will fight to win an march on. We are just getting started," he averred.

At Cardinal Otunga High Mosocho Grounds, Musingu High edged Machakos School 1-0. In the girls soccer, Nairobi's Dagoretti Mixed beat Alara girls 1-0  at the Gusii Stadium, while Kombani and St. Joseph's match ended on a 1 -1 draw.

Nyakach Girls humiliated Kinale with a 3-1 score as Butere Girls beat Kibauni 1-0. The competition enters day II on Monday.
