Rovanpera reigns supreme in Kenya to clinch second Safari title
Rovanpera ousted Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville from the lead on the second day of the rally and has supremely led since then winning his second Safari rally title here in Kenya.
The flying Finn who is not doing the full season this year was coming from dismal performance in Sweden and proved the man to beat from the word go accumulating almost a minute lead in the first full day.
Hyundai’s reliability issues meant Rally Sweden winner Esappeka Lappi and teammate Ott Tanak who were closely pursuing Rovanpera fell off the challenge leaving the Toyota man with literally no competition.
Having ended day three with over 2 minutes lead, the 2022 WRC Safari rally champion eased off the gas pedal to ensure he brought home his second title in Kenya.
“It’s always special this event, this event is so tough. Legendary event for Toyota, we have always been so good here. As they say in Africa, the car in front is always a Toyota. We’ve done a good job, clever driving and many thanks to the team for all their help,” said Rovanpera.
Japanese hotshot Takamoto Katsuta showed high level-headedness to claim his third podium here in Kenya, finishing second behind teammate Rovanpera.
“It’s a very nice feeling (to finish on the podium). It’s been a very tough weekend. I must say huge thanks to the team, they looked after the car so well. Of course some points I made mistakes and got punctures but the team did so well and honestly, reliability is one of the most important things. Thank you guys.”
M-Sport Ford’s Adrien Formaux continued his rich vein of form this season as he finished third here in Kenya, his second WRC podium after his heroics in Rally Sweden secured him his first WRC podium.
The Frenchman expertly navigated his Puma Rally 1 throughout the weekend and his patient approach to the Safari rally paid off tenfold as he maintained third position in the overall 2024 WRC Standings.
“I’m so pleased. I have to congratulate the team because we had no issues with the car all weekend; I am so pleased it’s working. This podium is dedicated to them.”
Toyota Gazoo racing’s Elfyn Evans finished fourth with Belgian Thierry Neuville rounding off the first five positions.
