Rising Stars set for CECAFA with eyes on AFCON qualification
Kenya's under-20 national football team, the Rising Stars, is set to compete in the upcoming CECAFA tournament in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to secure a spot in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The team finalised their final preparations with a training session at Mpesa Academy in Thika, Kiambu County.
Head coach Salim Babu expressed confidence in the squad, stating that all players are ready for the challenge ahead, except for one who will join the team in Tanzania.
“To qualify for AFCON, we have to win CECAFA, and we will win. The morale is high, and we promise a good result,” Babu said, urging Kenyan supporters to rally behind the team.
Team captain Amos Wanjala, who currently plays for Athletic Club Torrellano in Spain, echoed the coach’s optimism and highlighted the team's support from the government and coaching staff.
“We know it won’t be easy, but I believe in my teammates and coaches, and I’m confident we’re going to win,” Wanjala affirmed.
The U-20 CECAFA qualifiers will take place from October 6 to 20. Kenya has been placed in Group A, along with hosts Tanzania, Rwanda, Sudan, and Djibouti.
Defending champions Uganda will compete in Group B, alongside South Sudan, Burundi, and Ethiopia.
