Kenya’s national under-20 football team, Rising Stars, is intensifying preparations for their debut at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to kick off on April 26.
However, uncertainty
looms over the tournament after reports emerged that hosts Ivory Coast have
withdrawn due to logistical challenges.
Head Coach Salim Babu
remains optimistic about his team’s chances, emphasising the squad’s readiness
and determination to make a mark in the competition.
"Preparations
have been good since we started training on Monday last week. The boys are
ready, and everyone wants a chance to play at AFCON. We have a strong team this
time, though we are still waiting for a few players like Amos Wanjala and
Aldrine Kibet, among others. Once they join, we will be even stronger,"
said Babu, during a training session on Wednesday.
Kenya is in Group C
alongside Sierra Leone, defending champions Senegal, and Zambia. Babu believes
that while the group may appear manageable, the team must remain focused.
"We are in a
group that, if we do things right, will be competitive but not impossible.
People should not assume it will be easy; we need a solid plan. Going as
underdogs might work in our favor. Our goal is to win the first two games and
secure a spot in the quarter-finals," he added.
Defender Baron
Ochieng echoed the coach’s sentiments, highlighting the team’s cohesion and
determination.
"We have been in
good form. Most of us have played together since the U-18 level in 2023, so we
have built great chemistry. We are not going as underdogs; we are ready for the
challenge and will handle the pressure. Football is about teamwork, and we are
prepared to fight for the title," said Ochieng.
Meanwhile, Football
Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President McDonald Mariga has been actively
supporting the team. Babu expressed gratitude for the federation’s backing and
urged Kenyans to rally behind the squad.
"We appreciate
the support from FKF and especially Mariga. We won’t disappoint Kenyans, and we ask for
their prayers," Babu stated.
The Rising Stars have
been training in Thika in preparation for the tournament, and should the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirm a new host, Kenya will be eager to showcase its talent on the
continental stage.
CAF is expected to make an official announcement regarding the fate of the tournament following Ivory Coast’s withdrawal next week.
