National U-20
football team, the Rising Stars, received a morale-boosting send-off earlier
today at State House as President Ruto officially flagged them off ahead of
their historic debut in the upcoming U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in
Egypt.
The colourful event was attended by
top government officials, including Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, and
marked a significant moment for the youthful side, who are gearing up for their
first appearance at the continental showpiece set to kick off on April 27,
2025.
"You have the full support of
the government of Kenya and my support as well. Thank you, and go make us
proud. Make the country proud," President Ruto stated during his address,
emphasizing his administration’s unwavering commitment to nurturing football
talent across the country.
The Head of State also seized the
opportunity to applaud Kenya’s growing pool of football talent, reaffirming his
government’s agenda to strengthen sports development as a pillar of national
pride and youth empowerment.
In a heartfelt promise to the
squad, President Ruto pledged to personally attend the final in Egypt but only
on one condition.
"I know you’re heading to
Egypt, and I understand the assignment is tough. But if you qualify for the
final, I’ll be there. Make me come to the finals of AFCON. Just get there
I’ll be in the stands cheering you on," the president declared,
sparking excitement among players and fans alike.
The Rising Stars face a stern test
in Group B, where they’ve been drawn against North African powerhouses Morocco
and Tunisia, alongside continental giants Nigeria. Despite the tough draw, the
youthful side is brimming with optimism and determination to make the country
proud on the continental stage.
