President William Ruto mourns fallen volleyball queen Janet Wanja

The 40-year-old celebrated setter was diagnosed with the rare cancer a few months ago, shortly after returning from the Paris Olympics, where she served as a fitness trainer for the Malkia Strikers.

In a statement, President Ruto said Wanja was a gifted and disciplined volleyball star, who served the cause of Kenya’s sports with honour and dedication.

“She was focused, hardworking and a team player. May it be comfort to her family, friends and the wider sports fraternity that we are praying for them at this tough and difficult time. One day, we will beat cancer. Rest in Peace, Wanja,” said Ruto.

Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry CS Aden Duale also mourned the decorated Malkia Strikers and Kenya Pipeline former setter.

“It is with utter shock that we have learnt about the demise of Janet Wanja, a celebrated volleyball star who fought valiantly against cancer. As we grapple with this heartbreaking loss, we send our deepest sympathies to her family and the volleyball fraternity.

“May you find comfort in knowing she lived a life that touched many and her unwavering spirit on and off the court is an inspiration to many.”

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Hussein Mohammed said Wanja’s legacy will be cherished forever.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the legendary Janet Wanja, a former volleyball star who has left us after battling cancer. Your legacy will forever be cherished.”

Nyeri Town MP Dunn Maina, who is also a former Kenyan volleyball international player, said the country lost one of the best volleyball assets.

“I first met Janet Wanja back in the 90s, just after she had sat her KCPE exams, through coach Juma Walukhu of Kahawa Garrison, who was fundraising for her to join secondary school. At that time, I had just begun my private practice in Westlands. We pooled some money for her to join Kahawa Secondary School, but it wasn't enough. However, the relentless coach Juma got her admitted to Mukumu Girls due to her exceptional volleyball prowess.

“Janet Wanja would grow into one of the finest setters in volleyball, dominating the position for many years. Her contributions to the sport and her role as a trailblazing female athlete have left an indelible mark on Kenyan sports. Volleyball has lost a great role model, a rare sporting talent, and an icon,” he said.

Principal Secretary, State Department for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said: “We join Kenyans and the sporting family in mourning the untimely demise of Janet Wanja, a volleyball icon who inspired countless young athletes with her unmatched talent and determination.

“Her loss is not just a blow to her family and friends but to the entire nation. In this moment of grief, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones.”
