Police hockey team to miss the services of Okeyo as midfielder returns to Germany
The Kenya Police hockey team will miss the services of two of their key players – Robert Masibo and Willis Okeyo – who are expected to leave the country for a one-month professional stint in Germany.
Okeyo, a midfielder by trade,
will join VfB Stuttgart for the eighth time while Masibo will join the Hebron
hockey team for the second time.
Okeyo who was part of the Police
team that beat Greensharks 2-1 on Sunday, revealed that they are expected to
leave the country later this week.
"I want to play in the
Vaisakhi tournament but we should be off by Friday latest," Okeyo said.
Their departure comes at a time
when Police are expected to play Sailors on April 23 in the Vaisakhi
tournament that began on the 16th of this month.
Following their departure, Police
coach Patrick Mugambi said that he will find solutions within his squad to fill
the void left by the two. In the meantime, he challenged new signings – Fidelis
Omondi and Brian Kiptum - to step up and take up the roles left by Okeyo and
Masibo.
“The (the new signings) are still
learning the ropes. They are young and energetic with room for improvement,”
the head coach said.
On the other side, Mugambi is
hoping to turn around last season’s misfortunes that saw his team hit by
several injuries and win the current tournament. He has, however, noted that
Western Jaguars are the only team that can thwart his team’s dream of lifting
the trophy.
"We want to win the
tournament but our only hindrance could be Jaguars. They are an exciting team
to watch," he said.
