Police Bullets to pitch camp in Uganda ahead of Cecafa Tourney
Kenya Women Premier League (KWPL) champions Kenya Police will
pitch camp in Uganda from August 3, 2024 as they prepare to make their bow in
the CAF Women’s Champions League Cecafa qualifiers set for next month in Addis
Ababa, Ethiopia.
The regional tournament is scheduled to kick off on August 17,
stretching to September 4.
The law enforcers were on Wednesday pooled in a tough Group A
against Ethiopia heavyweights Commercial Bank (CBE), Yei Joint FC (South Sudan,
Warriors Queens (Zanzibar) and Rayon Sport Women’s (Rwanda).
Bullets Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Chris Oguso has has
explained why the team will be camping in Uganda.
“We were torn between between Tanzania and Uganda but we finally
have decided to camp in Uganda. The team will leave on August 3 and camp there
till August 12, when they will head straight to Addis Ababa.”
Oguso is optimistic Bullets will qualify for the Caf Women’s
Champions League.
“The team will have an advantage of
being supported by their men counterparts who will be playing Coffee of Ethiopia
in their second leg match of the Caf Confederations Cup which be staged the same
time when they will be playing. I want to thank our Ministry of defence PS
Raymond Omollo who promised to assist us financially ahead of the trip and I
believe the ladies will perform well as we aim to win Cecafa and qualify for
the fourth edition of Caf Women’s champion’s league.”
“We have analysed our competitors
from pool A and I can say the hosts CBE are our main rivals because they will
have some home advantage. Despite that, we are the Kenyan champions and we have
done great signings, so I expect a good job from Police. CBE have stormed the
final in previous seasons but they haven’t won the title, so we hope history
will repeat itself,” he assessed.
Bullets have bolstered their squad by acquiring five new faces
including striker Emily Moranga and defender Norah Ann-both from Vihiga Queens,
midfielders Jane Hato of Mathare United Women, former FK Apolonia Fier
(Albania) midfielder Lourna Nyarinda Nyabuto and former Gokulam Kerala (India)
forward Bertha Omita.
They are still targeting other
players including Zetech Sparks’ Samantha Akinyi who is in their radar.
Bullets, who were crowned FKF Women Premier League champions in
June this year, will start their campaign against Zanzibar’s Warriors Queens on
the first day of the tournament at Addis Ababa Stadium, before taking on Yei
Joint FC three days later.
They will then square it
out with Ethiopia’s CBE on August 23, before wrapping up group matches with a
clash against Rayon Sport Women’s on August 29.
Group B has Tanzania’s Simba Queens
(Tanzania), P.V.P Buyenzi (Burundi), Kawempe Muslim Ladies (Uganda), and FAD
Djibouti (Djibouti).
