Kenya Harlequins Rugby Football Club has ushered in a new chapter with the appointment of club legend Patrice Agunda as the head coach ahead of the 2025 National Sevens Circuit and the 2025/2026 Kenya Cup season.

Agunda, a former Kenya international and Harlequins stalwart, takes over the role with immediate effect.

His promotion follows years of dedicated service to the club’s technical bench, where he held several coaching roles, including skills coach, 7s coach, and assistant coach.

Most recently, he led the Quins women's team to the semi-finals in their debut season.

“I’m honoured to take up this role. We have great potential, and I’m ready to build on our legacy,” said Agunda following the announcement.

In 2024, Agunda participated in an elite coaching exchange program with the Japanese national rugby team, an experience the club believes will be instrumental in shaping his coaching philosophy.

During his playing career, Agunda spent 15 seasons at Kenya Harlequins, five of them as captain. His achievements include three Kenya Cups, three Rugby Super Series titles, an Enterprise Cup, and a National Sevens Circuit title. He was inducted into the club’s Roll of Honor in 2014.

Internationally, Agunda represented Kenya in both 15s and 7s, earning accolades with the Kenya Simbas and Shujaa.

He was part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2013 Rugby Sevens World Cup and featured at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. He also captained regional teams, including the Elgon Warriors in 2021.

Kenya Harlequin Chairman Victor Sudi expressed confidence in Agunda’s leadership:

“Kenya Harlequin FC has a long tradition of developing high-level, professional rugby coaches for club and country. Four years ago, we began a strategy to prepare our next generation of coaches.

"We are delighted that Patrice is taking over as our new head coach and wish him and his team the very best.”

Agunda’s appointment is seen as a blend of continuity and fresh leadership, aligning with Quins’ long-term vision to restore their dominance in Kenyan rugby.

Agunda takes over Quins days after the club parted ways with ex-International Paul Murunga.
