National paravolley teams are calling for increased support from the government to guide them to success at this year’s African Para Volley Championships to be held on July 1-10 in Nairobi.
The women’s team captain Jackline Achieng says they lack basic resources to train at the Kasarani Indoor Arena and also face mobility challenges related to their disabilities and the nature of the sport as they prepare for the continental showpiece.
“We started training from15th this month to prepare adequately ahead of the Africa zone Championship which is around the corner. So far so good, we have a big squad so far but unfortunately we will be forced to narrow it down ahead of the residential camp,” Achieng.
Achieng, who has represented Kenya in the previous three tournaments, was full of optimism that they will integrate the new players well as they seek to build a formidable squad.
“We have a blend of experience and new players who we hope will have clicked well in time for the games. The government has been our only sponsor so far, and we appreciate their effort.”
The men’s captain Caleb Otieno says that both the teams are facing similar challenges and urged sponsors to come for their assistance.
“Training is a bit difficult since we lack key equipment such as balls and jerseys. We call upon anyone out there to come in and assist us as we push for qualification.”
Kenya Para Volley Federation deputy secretary general Nicholas Lagat said their challenge is access to suitable playing surfaces, adequate infrastructure, and the ability to effectively train and compete.
“The players take a long time to get here and take even a lot more time to get to their residences. The federation will step in when we start camp in a week's time.”
“The players are now here in Nairobi on their own expenses, we have players from all over the country who dig deep in their pockets to get here and also to accommodate themselves in the city.”
Lagat blamed the local media for side lining para volley as compared to other sports even as he rallied the fans to come out and support the team.
“We urge the local media to give us more visibility; we want people to know we have a good team and that we will be hosting the Africa zone qualifiers. We expect the fans to turn up in numbers and cheer us on.”
