Olympian Ndolo pledges to make fencing in Kenya big

Kenya’s sole fencing representative at this year’s Paris Olympics, Alexandra Ndolo, has pledged to inspire and nurture a new generation of fencing athletes in the country.

Ndolo is currently spearheading initiatives to popularize the sport among young talents in Nairobi.

This week, she visited Olympic Primary School, where she introduced boys and girls from the Kibera-based NGO, Anno’s One Fine Day, to the fundamentals of fencing.

The one-hour session, facilitated by the French Embassy, concluded with an exciting fencing exhibition between Ndolo and coach Ashley Ngoiri.

Reflecting on the experience, Ndolo expressed her excitement, emphasizing her passion for inspiring future fencers.

“I love sharing my sport with kids and encouraging them to dream big. Right now, I might be the only Kenyan fencer at the Olympics, the first African champion, but I don’t want to be the last,” she said.

At 37, Ndolo’s commitment to the sport is unwavering. She was particularly moved by the children’s enthusiasm and eagerness to learn, seeing it as a sign of untapped potential for fencing in Kenya.

“Our kids don’t lack talent or drive—they lack opportunities. I’ve fenced for Germany for 15 years and seen the differences between European and Kenyan systems. With access to equipment and training, these kids are hungry to excel. Kenya doesn’t just have great runners; we have great fencers too,” she noted.

Krysteen Savane, director of Anno’s One Fine Day, also lauded Ndolo’s efforts, describing her visit as a transformative moment for the children.

Ndolo’s tour includes a series of activities aimed at raising the sport's profile, including an exhibition at Karen Country Club, a film screening and cocktail event at Alliance Française, and an end-of-year party at Lycée Français International Denis Diderot.

Through her passion and dedication, Ndolo is carving a path for Kenya’s future fencing stars, determined to leave a legacy that transcends her own achievements.
