Olunga tips Harambee Stars to pip Gambia World Cup qualifier

Harambee Stars skipper Michael Olunga is upbeat about Kenya’s prospects in their 2026 World Cup qualifier against The Gambia on Thursday.

The team departed for Ivory Coast on Tuesday morning and will return to Kenya on Friday to prepare for their clash with Gabon at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

Olunga says they have what it takes to improve their fourth seeding after the opening four fixtures.

“We are in good spirits as we travel for the Gambia encounter. We have trained well and everyone is on the same page regarding what we want to achieve as a team.

“Our immediate objective is to have good results from the two encounters against Gambia and Gabon.” He said.

Olunga emphasized the importance of focus and teamwork, highlighting that the squad understands the magnitude of the upcoming matches in shaping their World Cup qualification campaign.

“We know how crucial these next two matches are. Every point counts at this stage, and as a team, we are determined to give our best. The coaches have prepared us tactically and mentally, and we are confident we can execute the game plan,” Olunga added.

The Harambee Stars will face a familiar opponent in The Gambia, having previously encountered them in past AFCON qualifiers. However, Olunga insists that they are not taking anything for granted.

“Each game is different. We respect The Gambia—they are a strong side—but we are ready to rise to the challenge. The boys are hungry, motivated, and eager to make Kenyans proud,” he said.

After Thursday’s clash in Ivory Coast, the team will quickly focus on their home fixture against Gabon on Sunday. Olunga called on Kenyan fans to rally behind the team, especially for the crucial home game.

“Playing at home is always special. We urge our fans to come out in large numbers at Nyayo Stadium. Their support gives us an extra push, and together, we can make these matches memorable,” Olunga concluded.

Kenya currently sits fourth in Group F, and positive results from the doubleheader could significantly improve their chances of qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in the country’s history.
