Okwemba calls for collective responsibility over Leopards slump

Former AFC Leopards midfielder Charles Okwemba has attributed the team’s current dip in form to lack of passion from the playing unit.

The former Kenyan international feels the players are not giving their maximum effort, saying they should play to their fullest potential and also have a collective responsibility for recent poor results.

Leopards have gone five games without a win and Okwemba warns that what was initially a blip could turn to a crisis should the poor run persist.

“There are no quality players in that team and those who are there don’t understand the importance of playing for the badge and that jersey. That is where the problem is.”

Ingwe fell 2-1 to Shabana in midweek action on Wednesday with their last triumph in the league stretching back to September 29 when they claimed a 2-1 win over City Stars.

“There seems to be no coordination between the players, technical bench and the club leadership. Everyone seems to be on their own doing their things which is not good at all,” added Okwemba.

They face fellow strugglers Police FC at Dandora Stadium on Sunday, a match Okwemba says will be tricky as both teams are eyeing to return to winning ways.

“They are doing a lot of injustice to the fans who are very passionate about the team but at the moment you don’t know what to expect with the team’s results.”

Elsewhere, reigning champions Gor Mahia seek to build on their midweek 2-0 rout against Kakamega Homeboyz when they face the league’s surprise package Mara Sugar at Raila Odinga Stadium on Saturday.

Boniface Omondi and Bryson Wangai scored either side of half-time to hand stand-in coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno all the three points in his first match in-charge following the sacking of Leonardo Neiva earlier this month as the champions ended a four match winless run.

Second-placed Mara Sugar will want to avoid losing further ground after a 2-1 loss to Tusker FC on Wednesday to go three matches without a win. They are five points adrift of leaders KCB.

KCB are seeking to end a minor blip when they play Bidco United in Murang’a on Saturday after dropping two points against Police FC last Tuesday.
