Former AFC Leopards midfielder Charles Okwemba wants other FKF Premier League teams to invest more on top talents if they are to challenge ‘ever dominating’ Gor Mahia next season that begins this weekend.

Gor have won nine out of 12 league titles since 2013 and only Tusker have put brakes on their charge in 2016, 2021 and 2022 with an unprecedented 21st triumph in 2023/2024 season.

The former Kenyan international says other teams need to step up and disrupt Gor Mahia’s stranglehold on Kenya's football scene.

“Other teams need to pull up their socks to stop this dominance by Gor Mahia. It is sad even when Gor have a weak team they still win the league. What does it tell you about the standard of our league? I hope this season will be different and that other teams have prepared well,” said Okwemba.

Okwemba has tipped Police FC to mount a serious title challenge this year after roping in veteran striker Jesse Were and former Ulinzi Stars head coach Anthony Kimani. They finished third last season.

“They have a very solid team with a very good technical bench that understands the league. I see them being one of the favourites to challenge Gor next season if they continue the project from where the left last season,” added the former midfield maestro.

The law enforcers finished third last season and also won the FKF Cup.

Gor will launch their title defence on September 14 against Ulinzi Stars while Police FC will be up against Shabana FC the following day.

The two teams will be unavailable for the opening weekend as they are engaged in the continental assignment.
