Okutoyi, Owegi hit top form as Kenya dominate Botswana in Billie Jean Cup
The Kenyan duo of Angela Okutoyi and Alicia Owegi put on a
towering performance to inspire a 3-0 win over third seed Botswana on Tuesday's
second day of the Billie Jean King Tennis Africa Group III at Nairobi Club.
In the opening singles match, Alicia Owegi secured a 4-6,
6-4, 6-2 scalp against Cheludo Monanayoo, before Okutoyi dominated Chelsea
Chakanyuka 6-1 and 6-2 in both sets to make it 2-0 for Kenya.
The Doubles Match Three was thrilling, with Okutoyi and her
twin sister Roselida Asumwa teaming up against Chelsea Chakanyuka and
Kelebogile Monayo.
Kenya's dynamic duo proved too much for Botswana, winning
both sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-4, securing a 3-0 win against Botswana.
While expressing her excitement about playing with her twin
sister, a purring Okutoyi exhibited confidence in their prospects of going all the way in the tournament.
“It feels nice to play together after a long time and coming
out with a win for the team. We are
energetic now, and we have more confidence going forward to the next
matches,” she said Okutoyi.
Tuesday's impressive exploits saw Kenya jump to second seed
in Pool A after leaders Nigeria who dispatched Namibia 2-0 courtesy of Quardre
Barakat's 6-4, 6-0 victory over Lisa Yssel and Divine Nweke's dominant 6-0, 6-0
win over Joanivia Bezuidenhout.
Elsewhere, Morocco bounced back from their opening-day shock loss to Kenya by defeating Uganda 2-0
