Oilers kick off Kenya Cup campaign with renewed focus
Menengai Oilers RFC head coach Gibson Weru exuded
confidence in his squad while emphasizing the importance of internal growth
ahead of their league opener against Kisumu RFC slated for Saturday 23rd at the
ASK, Nakuru showgrounds.
Speaking in an interview with Citizen Digital, Weru
reflected on the team's pre-season preparations and their maiden Impala
Floodlight title win two weeks ago.
“Pre-season has been great. Our pre-season
tournament (Floodlight) was a good source of feedback on areas that are good
and can be made better as well as areas that need more attention and detail.”
he offered.
Oilers, who claimed their first 15s title at the Impala Floodlights tournament, have been building momentum heading into the Kenya Cup season.
Weru praised the healthy competition within the squad, which
he believes has been instrumental in pushing players to perform at their best.
“Preparations have been good; the competition within
the squad is healthy, and we are keeping each other honest,” he added.
Despite their recent success, Weru maintained that
the team's focus remains on self-improvement. He stressed that their primary
challenge lies in their ability to continually grow as individuals and as a
unit.
“The biggest challenge lies within! How much can we
improve each day as individuals and as a team? That, of course, will translate
to how we want to play. We will focus on ourselves; the growth within has no
limits,” Weru emphasized.
Four new acquisitions namely: Amos Obaeh who was signed
from Nakuru RFC, Victor Were, Collins Ovamu, and Collins Okoth are set to make
their top-flight debut for the club on Saturday.
Kabras RFC are the defending champions and will open
their title defence campaign against Impala RFC in Kakamega.
