Odongo lauds KCB after dimming Ulinzi Stars

KCB's Kevin Okumu beats his Ulinzi Stars markers to shoot during their Kenya Premier League 2-1 win over the hosts at the Ulinzi Complex on Saturday.

KCB Assistant Coach Jeffer Odongo is delighted with his boys' show in their 2-1 win over Ulinzi Stars on Saturday, saying it was a show of resilience and determination.

Goals from fullback Kevin Okumu and substitute Francis Kahiro were enough for KCB to gun down hosts Ulinzi in a rescheduled FKF Premier League fixture played at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, Lang'ata.

Odongo congratulated the team, adding a special mention for players James Kinyanjui, Mansoor Okwaro and Mathias Isogol; who have received national call-ups ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.

The coach noted the trio indeed deserve to be in the national team, noting their class was shown even in the crucial win over the soldiers.

“The three have been key players for us and even today, Kinyanjui’s deep efforts contributed to the second goal. I wish them the best of luck with the national team,” Odongo stated.

Speaking after the match, a delighted Okumu said the win was much-needed to boost their confidence after a challenging run in the league.

“We are all happy with the win. We have been having a rough time lately, but it is good to see us slowly finding our confidence again. Hopefully, we can continue this positive run,” Okumu said.

The win meant KCB solidified their place in the top four, now fourth with 39 points, while Ulinzi are tenth with 28 points on the Premier League log.

Ulinzi Stars drew first blood, scoring the opening and their only goal just 13 minutes into the match.

Joseph Ochieng found the back of the net with a low strike from outside the box, beating KCB goalkeeper Boniface Munyasa, who has become a regular starter since the departure of Farouk Shikhalo.

KCB responded in the 18th minute through fullback Okumu, who netted the equaliser after being set up by team captain Michael Mutinda.

Both teams had chances to take the lead, with KCB’s Danson Kiprono having a goal ruled out for offside. The first half ended 1-1.

In the second half, substitute Kahiro, who replaced Derrick Otanga, scored the winning goal for KCB, securing a 2-1 victory.
